Day 3 – Salzburg
Today we visit one of Europe’s historic gems. Salzburg, known as the ‘Sound of Music’ city, is set in a spectacular mountain setting, squeezed between the River Salzach and the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress. As well as the magnificent fortress, key attractions include Mozart’s birthplace, the Mirabel Palace and the famous Catacombs.
Day 4 – Attergau Train & Boat Cruise on Lake Attersee
After a leisurely breakfast we join the little train down from Attergau to Lake Attersee for a cruise on the north part of the lake. Lake Attersee, embedded in the picturesque landscape of the Prealps, is Austria’s largest lake. We return by train to St. Georgen with the rest of the afternoon free to explore the village or relax in the hotel.
Day 5 – Austrian Lake District
Today we embark on a full day tour of the beautiful Austrian Lake District visiting the towns of Mondsee, St. Gilgen and St Wolfgang. First we visit Lake Mondsee and its beautiful village, whose church was used for the wedding scene featured in the Sound of Music. We then make our way to the Lake of Wolfgangsee and visits to the beautiful and historic St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, a stunning village set on the shores of the lake and home to the famous White Horse Inn.
Day 6 - Bad Ischl & Halstatt
First we head to the spa town of Bad Ischl, home of emperors and composers. Steeped in history, Bad Ischl is where the Emperor Franz Joseph spent most of his summers and signed the declaration of war against the Kingdom of Serbia, signalling the start of WW1. In the afternoon we make our way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Halstatt. Nestled between the edge of Hallstätter See and the towering Dachstein mountains, Austria’s oldest and possibly most photographed village is something like a mirage in the Salzkammergut Lake Region.
Day 7 – Berchtesgaden
After breakfast we journey across the border into Germany and the town of Berchtesgaden, one of the most romantically scenic places in the Bavarian Alps. The historic old market town and mountain resort has great charm and in the summer becomes one of the region’s most popular destinations. Why not visit the site of Hitler’s infamous Eagle’s Nest or take a train journey through Berchtesgaden’s Salt Mine? (please note: entrance fees are not included)
